Visualizing Solubilization by a Realistic Particle Model in Chemistry Education

An application for the visualization of the mixing process of two different types of structureless interacting particles is presented. The application allows to demonstrate on a qualitative basis, as well as by quantitatively monitoring the time evolution of the fractions of aggregates of different sizes, that the formation of a homogeneous mixture is the result of favorable solute-solvent interactions as well as by temperature. It is suggested that, along with the use of suitable macroscopic examples, visualizations by the present application are useful in elucidating concepts related to miscibility/solubility. Influence of Different Environments and Temperatures on the Photo-Oxidation Behaviour of the Polypropylene.

The photo-oxidation of polypropylene at two different temperatures and in three different environments—air, distilled water and sea water—has been followed as a function of the irradiation time. The photo-oxidation kinetic is dramatically dependent on the amount of oxygen available for the oxidation reactions and on the temperature. While the photo-oxidation is very fast in air, the degradation is much slower in the two aqueous media. The degradation in sea water is slightly slower than in distilled water. Solubility and solvation features of native cyclodextrins in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate

The comprehension of the mechanism entailing efficient solvation of cyclodextrins (CD) by green solvents is of great relevance to boost environmentally sustainable usages of smart supramolecular systems. Here, 1-ethyl-3- methylimidazolium acetate, an ecofriendly ionic liquid (IL), is considered as an excellent solvent for native CDs. Toxicity assessment and biodegradation potential of water-soluble sludge containing 2,4,6-trinitrotoluen

The water-soluble phase of trinitrotoluene-containing sludge (SLP) was characterized with regard to trinitrotoluene (TNT) concentration, ecotoxicity, and a model biodegradation experiment as evaluation criteria for further development of appropriate treatment technologies. SLP contained 67.8 mg TNT/l. The results of germination and root-elongation tests indicated that SLP had a species-specific phytotoxic effect. The results of a 21 day degradation experiment demonstrated TNT conversion to 4-amino-2,6-DNT and 2-amino-4,6-DNT, with a simultaneous reduction in the total concentration of nitroaromatics. Structure-properties relationships of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) filled PS nanocomposites

The polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) additivated polystyrene (PS) based nanocomposites were pre- pared by melt processing and the structure-properties relationships of the POSS-PS systems were compared to those of the neat PS. In order to investigate the effect of these structural parameters on the final properties of the polymer nanocompos- ites, five different kinds of POSS samples were used, in particular, POSS with different inorganic cage and with different organic pendent groups. A New Simple Static Method for the Determination of Solubilities of Condensed Compounds in Supercritical Fluids

Abstract A simple static method based on gravimetric measurements has been adopted to measure the solubility of benzenecarboxylic acid, 2-hydroxy-benzenecarboxylic acid, 4-hydroxy-benzenecarboxylic acid and 1,8-dihydroxyanthraquinone along several isotherms in the temperature range 318–357 K and the pressure interval 7–23 MPa. Solubility data have been correlated with the Zieger–Eckert approach, using the Fedor atomic and group contribution method to estimate the solubility parameter and the molar volume of the solutes. Molecular surface calculations on organic compounds

Abstract The molecular surface area was calculated for 82 hydrocarbons, esters, ethers, alcohols and ketones including linear, branched and cyclic ones. The relationship between the aqueous solubility and the molecular surface area was determined for each family of compounds and for all the families together. The results show that solubility is mainly determined by molecular surface area and that the influence of functional group is the same for all the oxygen containing compounds studied.

Temperature effect on solubility of aroma compounds in various aqueous solutions

International audience; Solubility of nine aroma compounds (methyl ketones, ethyl esters, aldehyde and alcohol) in various aqueous solutions was measured by the mutual solubility method from -10 to +10degreesC. Influence of both, the nature (carbohydrates and polyols) and the substrate concentration (from 0 to 57.5g/100g) on aroma solubility in aqueous solutions was studied. Aroma solubility in water decreased when aroma hydrophobicity increased. Aroma solubility in various aqueous solutions decreased when substrate concentration increased; their solubility was higher in polyols solutions than in polysaccharides ones.
